What Can Make Your Scalp Dry

Your dandruff can be a bummer, but it's benign to your well being. Dandruff is just a "cosmetic" problem, says New York dermatologist Michele Green, MD. "It will not cause anything bad." No body knows just what causes dandruff, though a fungus called malassezia may may play a role. It's normal to possess malassezia on your skin. An excessive amount of it, though, is linked to dandruff.

What Can Make Your Scalp Dry

Dandruff and Dry Scalp are some of the common reasons your head can get dry and itchy:

Seborrheic dermatitis (or seborrhea): This common condition of the skin causes redness, irritation, and flaking. It can happen on many areas of the body. Whenever it affects the head, it's called dandruff. It's curable. Most often, over-the-counter medicated shampoos will stop the flakes from falling. More stubborn cases will probably benefit from prescription-strength shampoos and steroid ointments.

Scalp psoriasis can cause dandruff-like itching and flaking. Psoriasis occurs as soon as the immune system causes a lot of skin cells to develop on various parts associated with the body. That may consist of your head. People who have psoriasis may become more prone to get dandruff, but psoriasis isn't dandruff.

Eczema. This condition of the skin makes your scalp itchy and flaky. It is most common in babies and kiddies, but everyone can get it. The cause is unknown. Moisturizers and prescription steroid creams might help relieve the outward symptoms, as can avoiding harsh soaps and scratching. It helps you to avoid stress whenever feasible.

Specific diseases, such as for example Parkinson's and HIV, have also been linked to dandruff. People with these conditions have greater rates of dandruff, says Heather Onoday, RN. She's a nurse practitioner whom focuses on dermatology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore. Having dandruff doesn't make either of those conditions much more likely, though.

A poor diet even offers been suggested as being a culprit, although Green claims there isn't any proven link. Jeffrey Benabio, MD, agrees.

"We may see associations but we can't say that, for instance, vitamin D deficiency from not enough sunlight in cold weather causes dandruff," claims Benabio, a dermatologist with Kaiser Permanente in San Diego.

Eat a well-rounded diet for the all around health. A dry scalp doesn't mean you're lacking any particular nutrient, however.

3 Things That Can Make Dandruff Worse

These things do not cause dandruff, but they aggravate it in the event that you have it:

Not washing your hair frequently enough. "that is the simplest reason," Green states. "It must be washed each and every day or almost every other time."
Stress. "Stress makes everything worse," Green states. Stress takes place, so what really matters is the way you react to it.
The growing season. "It is constantly even worse through the winter, when it is really cold out and overheated indoors," Green states.

No matter what's causing your scalp to itch and flake, you can take control. "Over-the-counter remedies work very well, but see your physician when they don't work for you," Benabio states.
